The vault is still inside. Buckroe Coffee took over an old bank building on Pembroke Avenue and left the original vault in place, which is the kind of detail you remember a week later. The shop is veteran-owned. The owner is on the floor most days talking to customers, and the back yard is the part the team is genuinely proud of: hammock, picnic tables, a Virginia LOVE sign, a small dog park, and a playground the team is still building out. Community programming runs back there too, and the space is the reason a lot of families make it a routine stop on weekends. Acai bowls have been called the best in Hampton Roads, and the avocado toast holds up next to them. The Jessa, the Buckroe Buzz with strawberry syrup, a London fog with a cinnamon muffin, a ham and cheese croissant: this is a menu that knows what it is. Drive-thru handles the morning rush if you cannot get out of the car. Pup cups are on the board. The interior gets a lot of natural light through the old bank windows, and it is cozy in a way converted bank buildings rarely manage, with the vault sitting there as the conversation piece nobody gets tired of pointing out. One real warning: do not plan to work here on the wifi. Multiple regulars report it cutting out or never connecting in the first place, and it is consistent enough that calling it a quirk would be generous. If you need a hotspot, bring one. Otherwise, this is the kind of neighborhood shop that families and dog owners cycle through all week, with the owner remembering who you are by the third visit and the back yard turning into the actual hangout once the weather warms up. The drive-thru is there for the in-and-out morning. The yard, the playground, and the dog park are why people stay.
