Christina runs Common Grounds Cafe & Roastery at the end of a higher-end strip mall on Hill Boulevard in Jefferson Valley, just off the Taconic near the Yorktown mall, and the brunch program is the operation that pulls the most weight. Reservations on holidays are real, and they need to be made well in advance. A recent Mother's Day customer described 45-plus-minute entree waits with waitstaff standing idle, which is the honest flaw with the brunch model at full capacity.
Make the reservation, and make it early. That is the move on holidays.
The room is sleek and modern, with a mix of large dining tables, two-tops, high-tops, window seating, and bar seating. On weekdays, the cafe works for laptop customers comfortably. On holiday weekends, the operation runs past comfortable capacity, with the delays that follow from that.
The cinnamon-maple latte is the headline coffee order. Mocha latte is the reliable backup, the ceremonial-grade matcha is on the menu for the customer who knows what to ask for, and the chai latte is solid.
The full kitchen is where the cafe earns its weekend traffic. Caprese avocado toast with pesto, a tofu scramble for the vegan diner, focaccia grilled cheese, honey Brussels sprouts as a side worth ordering, omelets with potatoes, and an affogato for the customer who wants dessert with their espresso. French toast handles the brunch-classic order.
Outdoor picnic tables are dog-friendly. Staff bring water bowls.
For brunch parties, for vegan diners, for dog owners using the patio, and for remote workers on weekdays, Common Grounds delivers. For anyone walking in on Mother's Day without a reservation, the wait is the wait, and no amount of charm is going to shorten it.
Plan the visit. Order the cinnamon-maple latte either way, and the honey Brussels sprouts on the side if you came hungry.
