Fair Mountain calls itself a little hole in the wall, which is fair. The Atlantic Highlands storefront on First Avenue is small, espresso-forward, and built around a warm counter rather than a hangout vibe. A few indoor tables, a few outdoor ones, and beans for sale by the full pound. That is the operation.
The coffee is the reason to walk in. They roast on-site, which means the bags moving across the counter were beans this week, not last quarter. The Uganda single-origin pulled as espresso gets called out for dark-chocolate notes without anyone adding syrup. That is a meaningful detail. A lot of cafes serve dark espresso and reach for vanilla; this one stands on the bean itself.
The Bali medium roast won a regular over enough to name it a new favorite, which is the right kind of customer story for a shop this size. The macchiato and the flat white (with Oatly oat milk by default) are where most people land for an in-house drink. The bagged beans by the pound are what regulars leave with.
This is not a study spot, and the reviews do not mention wifi or extended seating because nobody is treating it that way. It is built for people who care what is in the cup and want to leave with beans for home. The counter relationship matters here more than the seating, and the staff lean into that.
If you are passing through the Bayshore stretch of New Jersey and want a small, honest, espresso-first counter to make a stop at, Fair Mountain earns it. Just do not show up expecting a couch and a long stay.
