Northbound Coffee Roasters sells coffee in five-pound bags. That's the pricing structure that tells you who the customer is. Home brewers who go through coffee fast, restaurants like Stu's Brews in Eureka, mail-order regulars who don't want to reorder every two weeks. Keith and his crew run a certified organic roastery on Berry Street in Mt Shasta, and the blend names read like a Pacific Northwest joke list. Lamplighter. American Beauty. Spoonbender. Trimmer's Delight. Happy Camper. Winter's Solstice when it's the season.
The American Beauty is the house espresso. The Lamplighter is the daily drinker people reach for first. The Winter's Solstice gets the seasonal slot. The Trimmer's Delight and the Happy Camper rotate through depending on what regulars are buying that month.
This is a roastery open to the public, not a cafe. One road-tripper had to ask for a double Americano because the operation is built around whole bean, not espresso pulls. If you walk in expecting a latte and a couch, you'll feel out of place. If you walk in expecting to leave with five pounds of beans you're already loyal to, the visit makes sense.
The shade-grown organic certification matters to the customer this place attracts. So does the shipping speed, which regulars consistently mention as fast. Northbound has built a regional supply role on the back of doing the same thing well, year after year, without chasing trends.
