The dessert lattes are what move at PJ's Coffee on Canal Street. The Wedding Cake gets ordered by name. So does the Bananas Foster, and the seasonal pumpkin spice that shows up on the menu when the weather pretends to cool. The cinnamon iced latte has its own quiet following. If you want actual coffee that tastes like coffee, the triple espresso is the move, and it's a perfectly competent shot.
The room is small and a little retro, with the kind of quaint cafe feel that doesn't broadcast chain even though PJ's is one. A few seats outside if the New Orleans weather agrees with sitting in it. Counter staff are friendly in the unforced way that comes from working a downtown shop where most of the customers are passing through once. It's a quick-cup spot first and a hangout second, and the room is honest about which one it is.
The Canal Street location pulls heavy tourist traffic, which is both its advantage and its weakness. The drinks have been uneven recently. Some days the Wedding Cake comes through balanced and not cloying, the way it's supposed to. Other days it lands too sweet or the espresso underneath gets buried. Customers have flagged this pattern enough that it's worth saying out loud.
Manage expectations and you'll have a fine time. If you're a tourist on the way from your hotel to the Quarter and you want something sweet and caffeinated with a New Orleans name on it, this stop works. The Bananas Foster is a smart order in that context, partly because the flavor profile gives you a sense of place that a generic vanilla latte never will. Don't go expecting third-wave consistency. Go expecting a friendly counter, a sugary drink, and a small retro room that fits the neighborhood. That's the trade.
