ROC2 doesn't serve brewed coffee. That's the first thing to understand about Roastery Of Cave Creek. David Anderson and his roaster Kumar run a warehouse operation, not a cafe, and people drive in from across the Phoenix area to buy bags. Some have been making that drive for over a decade, which tells you what kind of customer base this place has earned. The space looks the way you'd expect a working roastery to look. A drum, a few work tables, bags stacked against the wall. Walk in and someone will give you a tour, pour a sample of whatever came off the drum that morning, and probably press a free bag into your hands before you leave. The generous sampling is a real part of how the place runs, not a marketing line. The Black & Tan and Cowboy blends get the most repeat orders. Sumatra and the Guatemalan and Peruvian single origins for people who want to talk specifics with whoever is at the counter. Nitro cold brew comes on tap and in cans, which is the closest thing to a finished drink anyone is going to hand you across the counter on a given afternoon. When the doors are closed, there's a farm-stand cabinet outside where you grab bags with cash or an app. That kind of detail tells you what sort of operation this is and what sort of customer base it serves. People who know what they want and don't need a barista in between them and their beans. The shop also stocks beans at Sprouts, and longtime regulars have started flagging the price gap between the Sprouts shelf and the roastery itself as the one sore point. It matters more if you've been buying for ten years than if you're new. The argument from the roastery side is that the in-store experience is different. The pushback from the customer side is that the bag of beans is the same. Both have a point. This is a place for home espresso drinkers, bean buyers, and anyone who wants to talk to the roaster before paying for what they take home. If you want to sit down with a brewed cup, this isn't it. If you want to know who roasted your beans and when, ROC2 is exactly that.
