The dirty chai at Seven Seas gets called the best in San Diego, and it keeps coming up often enough that you should probably believe it. The South Park roastery makes its own beans on site (the Jaguar and the Peruvian are the ones regulars name), and the storefront leans into a nautical theme without going camp about it. A saltwater aquarium pulls every kid in the room. There is an octopus on the floor. The garage-door front rolls up onto Fern Street when the weather cooperates, which in this neighborhood is most of the year. A long window-bar runs the length of the room, and the staff keep the line moving even when the place is full. Order the Candy Blast on espresso if you want a single shot of what the roaster is doing, or the Marigold Mocha Latte with shaved pistachios if you would rather a drink that announces itself. An iced latte with a chocolate croissant is the standing combo. The wood-fired bagels are a real thing here, and a bagel with cream cheese will hold you for the morning. A maple cronut sits in the pastry rotation for the sweet move. Pup cups come with a peanut butter drizzle for the dogs on the outdoor seats, which has earned the place a steady weekend dog crowd. The catch: this is not a sub-two-minute coffee stop. One customer waited twenty minutes for an espresso. If you have somewhere to be, go somewhere else. Otherwise, post up at the window, watch the aquarium, and let the line take what it takes. Families come back for it. Dog owners come back for it. The kid who knocked over a drink got the staff helping clean it up, which says something about how the place runs. Neighborhood roastery is the right frame here. You go often, you know the baristas, you watch the kids press their faces against the tank, and you wait the extra minute on a busy morning because the drink is worth it.
