A barista once gave a customer the wrong wifi password on purpose, to discourage long stays. That detail tells you something about Smoky Hollow that the design language alone wouldn't. The shop sits on Sierra Street in El Segundo's Smoky Hollow industrial-creative pocket, near a film studio and an energy startup, and the room is built for short, productive sessions, not all-day camp-outs.
The space is industrial-creative: soft leather chairs, a long shared work table, cozy couches, small wooden coffee tables, and ambient noise pitched soft. The crowd skews creative-professional, twenties and thirties, the kind of people who work in nearby studios and offices. There's a small outdoor area in the parking lot with murals if the indoor seats are full. Same ownership as Blue Butterfly per one customer, so if you've been to that one, you'll recognize the bones.
The shop's other identity is as a near-LAX detour. It's a short drive from the airport, and the rum- and whiskey-infused beans available for takeaway have become a souvenir-tier purchase for travelers heading out. That's a real piece of the business and worth knowing if you're flying and want to bring something distinctive home.
What to order. The iced matcha latte with cinnamon, honey, and almond milk is the signature drink and the thing to get if you've never been. The Cho Cho San iced coffee is the other one to know by name. Nitro cold brew. Cappuccino. On the food side, the California Street Bagel Samich on jalapeno cheese or the Market Street Burger if you want something more substantial. The guava croissant and the passion fruit croissant both punch above their weight on the pastry side.
Practical notes that matter. The parking lot is tiny, and the surrounding street parking moves fast. The wifi cannot be counted on, especially for video calls, and now you know why. If you need a few focused hours and the wifi works, great. If it doesn't, treat the visit as a drink and a snack and head out. The shop is honest about what it wants to be, even if that honesty arrives in the form of a wrong wifi password handed to you with a smile.
