Witch's Brew Black Latte

A jet-black vanilla latte. The color comes from a little food-grade activated charcoal, which has almost no taste.

Ingredients

  • 2 shots espresso (about 2 oz / 60 ml), or 1/2 cup very strong brewed coffee
  • 1/4 tsp food-grade activated charcoal powder
  • 1 to 2 tsp vanilla or maple syrup
  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk or oat milk
  • Pinch of cinnamon, for the top

Steps

  1. 1Brew the espresso or strong coffee.
  2. 2In your mug, stir the charcoal and syrup with a splash of the hot coffee until it forms a smooth paste, then stir in the rest of the coffee.
  3. 3Heat the milk until steaming (do not boil) and froth it with a frother or by shaking it in a lidded jar.
  4. 4Pour the milk into the mug, holding back the foam with a spoon, then spoon the foam on top. Finish with a pinch of cinnamon.

Safety note: activated charcoal can bind to medications and supplements and stop them from working properly, including birth control. If you take any medication, skip the charcoal or leave at least 2 hours either side, and ask your pharmacist if unsure. Use only food-grade charcoal and keep it to an occasional treat. No charcoal? A drop of black food coloring works.

Pumpkin Cold Foam Cold Brew

Smooth cold brew topped with a thick, lightly sweet pumpkin foam that slowly sinks into the glass.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) cold brew concentrate
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) cold water
  • Ice
  • 3 Tbsp heavy cream
  • 2 Tbsp milk
  • 1 Tbsp pumpkin puree
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/8 tsp pumpkin pie spice, plus more for the top

Steps

  1. 1No concentrate yet? Stir 1 cup (about 85 g) coarsely ground coffee into 4 cups cold water, cover, and leave in the fridge 12 to 18 hours. Strain through a paper filter.
  2. 2Fill a tall glass with ice and add the cold brew concentrate and water.
  3. 3In a small jar, combine the cream, milk, pumpkin, maple syrup and spice. Froth with a handheld frother for 20 to 30 seconds, or shake hard in the sealed jar, until thick and pourable.
