Luis runs Acento Coffee Roasters in Point Loma as a house-roasting bar, where beans get weighed and ground in front of the customer and a black Scottish terrier named Trapo greets people at the door. Around eight roasts are on offer at any given time, which means the espresso menu is a choice of origins as much as a choice of drinks, and the Ethiopia as espresso comes served with sparkling water on the side, the way good espresso bars in Europe pour it as a matter of course. The room is small and chill, the neighborhood vibe a genuine one rather than a marketing line, and staff and regulars know each other by name and by drink before anyone has to ask. Tables and chairs are essentially nonexistent. Most visits are quick by design, which is the operating principle of a bean shop with an espresso bar attached rather than the other way around. Order the honey and cinnamon latte, an iced caramel latte, the Ethiopia as espresso with the sparkling water, a Freddo, a cold oat milk latte, a cortado for the road. Take home a bag of beans at around eighteen dollars, weighed and ground in front of you or left whole depending on what you brew with at home. Espresso-focused drinkers and bean collectors who want to chat with the roaster and don't mind standing get the most out of this place, and the eight-roast selection means the trip is worth making more than once to work through the lineup. There is no wifi. There is little seating. Do not show up expecting a working afternoon, because the place is not built for one and won't pretend otherwise. The Trapo factor is real. The dog is part of the visit, the way certain small businesses come with a pet who runs the floor on a Tuesday morning and remembers regulars before the regulars remember the dog. Show up for the espresso, meet Trapo, ask Luis which of the eight roasts he likes today, leave with a bag of it and a plan to come back next week for one of the other seven.
