American Bulldog Coffee Roasters is in downtown Ridgewood, with a second shop in Ramsey. The room has antique furniture, milk-glass tables, a real fireplace and smooth jazz. They roast on-site in the back. Walter, the shop dog, is a regular favorite. Their site says the coffee's organic and small-batch.

They make their own chai and cashew milk. The cappuccino is the standard morning order, and the chai latte is the house signature. There's also matcha, americanos and hot chocolate, and drinks can be made decaf or without sugar. In the case, look for apple cider donuts, pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, brownies, vegan cookies and gluten-free treats.

It's a morning routine for downtown workers and train commuters, and a cozy place for a long laptop session or a date.
