About

Americava sources Hawaiian Ka'u beans, which is the part to know if you're shopping. Ka'u is the growing region on the south side of the Big Island, and Ka'u beans get pitched as the alternative to Kona, which they essentially are: similar growing conditions, lower name recognition, lower price. The roaster is based in Hallandale Beach, Florida and runs as an online operation built around an American-sourcing identity.

The Liberty Light Roast is the flagship offering and what to order first. The whole bean Hawaiian Ka'u is the same coffee in the format home brewers want. The roast is light enough to let the origin character come through, which is the point of buying Ka'u in the first place; if you're going to pay Hawaii prices you want to taste the island, not the roaster's char.

Hawaiian coffee is expensive. There's no getting around that. Customers acknowledge the pricing but call it fair given the origin, which is a more honest summary than most direct-to-consumer roasters offer about their own product. If your reference point is grocery store coffee, the Liberty Light Roast will sting at checkout. If your reference point is Kona at retail prices, the Ka'u substitution looks like a deal.

If you want Hawaiian coffee without paying full Kona retail, and you respond to the American-sourcing branding, Americava is doing the thing it claims to be doing. Order the Liberty Light Roast and brew it as a pour over.
