About

Aquarela Coffee occupies the lobby of the CalEdison Building, a 1930s Art Deco landmark across from the Los Angeles Public Library. The ceiling runs ten meters high and the gold-brown ornamentation is the thing every customer notices before the cup hits the counter. That's the room you're sitting in, and the room is half the visit.

The coffee is Brazilian and a little unfamiliar. Beans are imported from the Amazon, and the baristas spend real time explaining menu items to customers who haven't seen them on a board before. The Brigadeiro Latte stacks dark chocolate, condensed milk, and a chocolate truffle into a single cup that does not pretend to be subtle. It is a dessert and a drink at the same time. Espresso drinks carry orange and spice notes that distinguish them from the usual third-wave defaults, and the baristas can talk you through which lot you're drinking.

The food program leans South American. Pao de queijo, the Brazilian cheese bread, comes with guava jam, which is the combination you didn't know you needed and now order every visit. Chicken croquettes are real. Blueberry coffee cake handles the sweet side for customers who don't want the South American direction.

This is not a laptop cafe. WiFi is free for sixty minutes and then paid, outlets are limited, tables are small, and the lobby gets noisy enough that focused work is a struggle. Parking is its own punishment: forty dollars or more for a few hours in the downtown garages, with no street parking realistic. The fit is the tourist who wants an architecturally serious coffee stop, the downtown worker stepping out of a nearby office, the adventurous drinker curious what a Brazilian roaster does differently with an Amazon bean. Remote workers and drivers planning to camp for an afternoon will spend more on parking than on coffee, which is the honest math.
