About

Backstory Coffee Roasters on the West Side of St Paul has been operating since 2014, with live in-shop roasting visible on the floor and a large outdoor patio next to a neighborhood market. The walk-up window handles to-go orders. Brown sugar caramel sauce is made in-house. Growlers of drinks travel home for the weekend. Viking Baked Goods supplies the pastry case. The room runs great chill welcoming cozy with a relaxed environment, peaceful at off-peak hours and a gathering place for locals when the patio fills.

Order the tiramisu cold brew if you want the house signature, or the caramel latte built on the in-house brown sugar caramel sauce that gives the place its name. The iced mocha is the daily pour. The eggnog chai shows up seasonally and pulls regulars back. The Apple Spiced Matcha is a vegan option that tastes like apples and matcha. For food, the French toast turkey sandwich comes with maple syrup for dipping, which sounds wrong and reads correctly once you try it.

Who it serves: West Side St Paul regulars, local-coffee customers around the Twin Cities who care where their beans come from, dog owners (the back area appears dog-friendly), and the warmer-month patio crowd that treats the outdoor seating as the main room. Cold-weather visits lean on the indoor space.

Three caveats. Indoor seating is limited and mostly high-top stools, which is not ideal for long sessions. Service has been called slow at both Backstory locations, which is worth knowing if you're on a tight schedule. And the flavored drinks have run too oat-milk-vanilla for some customers who want their oat milk to play a supporting role rather than dominate. Order the cold brew or the espresso side if you want the bean program speaking for itself.

The patio is the differentiator. Roasting visible from the floor, a walk-up window, growlers to take home, and Viking pastries in the case. Backstory has built itself into the West Side rhythm over a decade, and the program holds up.
