Coffee ice cubes, frozen from coffee instead of water, go into the iced drinks at the Alexandria outpost of Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii. Small detail, but it is the kind of thing that separates this chain location from any random suburban drive-thru. The Hawaii-based brand sets up shop here at the Hoffman Center near the AMC theaters, with the aloha greeting at the door and a large merchandise section that takes up real square footage.
No on-site roasting was indicated in customer feedback, despite the corporate framing.
The drink list runs flavored and tropical. Coffee lemonade is the surprise. The iced Maple Blondie latte is the breakfast move. The Kreme de Kona is exactly what you imagine. Three Waves iced with coco foam carries the texture interest. Turtle Kick is the dessert lane. For the customers who want the real thing, a 100% Kona pour-over is on the menu and worth ordering. Malasadas pair with any of it. The bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwich covers morning food.
Hawaiian-themed cafe oriented for throughput, with limited seating for the space and the merch section eating room. The island theme runs through without erasing the suburban-urban convenience layout.
This is a commuter cafe and a quick-stop room. Remote workers in the area do drop in. Fans of flavored Hawaiian blends have a real reason to come. Seating is scarce. The room is built more for pickup than for sitting and staying. Parking gets troublesome on Saturdays, when the theater crowd and the cafe crowd collide.
If you want a Kona pour-over without flying to the Big Island, this is the closest reasonable option in the Alexandria area, and the merch wall makes it a Hawaiian-souvenir stop too.
