Madeline and Julia work the counter at the Sarasota Bad Ass Coffee, and the shop sponsors local Senior softball, which is the level of community embedding that distinguishes a newer chain location from a generic one. The Hawaii-themed cafe opened recently and built a regular following fast, with staff that learn customers' names and their dogs' names within a few visits.
The space is large by chain standards. Lots of tables, comfortable chairs, a couch, outdoor seating, music playing soft enough that conversation works. Some customers find it cozy and welcoming. Others have run into rude staff that derailed the visit, which is worth knowing if you're picking a first-time stop carefully. The variance is real and seems to depend on who's working that shift.
The Hawaiian Kona coffee is the menu's anchor, alongside a Volcanic Ash dark roast that also gets sold as K-cups for the home rotation. The coffee ice cubes carry over from other Bad Ass locations and keep the iced drinks from watering down across a long Florida afternoon. Order the cold lava cold brew, or the 3 Waves latte that runs coconut, caramel, and macadamia nut together. The macadamia nut latte solo is the simpler version. The Bad Ass One breakfast sandwich is the food anchor, with a sugar cinnamon donut for the sweeter route. An iced chai with macadamia is the move if you want the tropical lean without coffee.
Dogs are welcome and the staff has been known to make a fuss over them, which dog owners notice. The honest limitations are real. Outlets are scarce, which makes prolonged laptop work hard. A handful of customers have reported the shop closing before posted hours, which has burned at least one person who showed up before listed closing time. Book club groups, regulars with their dog, and Hawaiian coffee fans will fit naturally. Laptop campers and people who need guaranteed service hours should plan around the friction.
