About

Walk into Big Mountain and the air is heavy with freshly roasted organic beans. That smell does most of the marketing. The cafe sits on US-101 in Depoe Bay next to Chester's Market, with shared lot access and a walk-up window so customers with dogs do not have to leave them in the car. There is also a separate drive-thru shack for through-traffic that does not want to park. Shioah, an owner, gets named in reviews repeatedly, which usually signals the kind of operation where the person at the espresso machine is also the person who roasted the beans.

The lobby is surprisingly large, with a chill, quiet vibe at odds with the highway just outside the windows. The Sasquatch blend is the one to take home, suited to an Aeropress and forgiving enough for the camping setup if you are heading down the coast. Chocoholics iced with an extra shot is the rich order, the one regulars name when asked what they always get. Drip prices stay reasonable in a town where everything else is priced for tourists, which is the kind of small kindness that wins repeat business from the people who live there year-round.

Customers often grab a cup and a bag of whole beans for the road, and a latte made with house-ground beans for the second leg. The organic, on-site roasting is the proposition that pulls coast travelers off the highway and turns them into people who remember to stop the next time through.

The seating is honest. One or two dedicated laptop spots with wifi exist for the rare visitor who wants to plug in, but this is not built to be a workday spot. It is built to be a coast-traveler stop with a real roastery behind it and a drive-thru shack for the through-traffic that does not have time to park.

Dogs are not allowed inside, which is the trade-off for the bright lobby, but the walk-up window handles them without making it a problem. The chocoholic order is genuinely rich. The Sasquatch bag is the souvenir that does not feel like one, because the Aeropress at home turns the bag into the morning routine for the next two weeks.
