Card-only, Turkish-leaning, established 2021 in the Aliso luxury apartment building on East 3rd Street, Boxx runs a single-origin pour-over program and the kind of authentic Turkish coffee that's hard to find in Los Angeles. The room is industrial, bright, and spacious, with seating that ranges from bench to bar to table to outdoor patio. Little Tokyo is around the corner, which makes the patio a people-watching spot worth the time.
Staff recommend the flat white over the standard latte, and they're right. The Ethiopian latte is the order if you want something bright. Single-origin pour-overs rotate through, the Peru drip has its fans, and the olive citrus muffin is the savory-sweet pastry-case surprise. The salt-and-chocolate-chunk cookie does what the name promises. Turkish coffee is on the menu in a real form rather than as a novelty, which is worth noting in a city where it often gets watered down or skipped entirely.
Laptop campers fit in well. Outlets are numerous, the wifi is solid, and the room handles a long work session without anyone getting cleared out. Dogs are welcome both indoors and on the patio, which makes the place rare in the area. Arts District visitors use it as the reliable coffee stop between gallery walks.
Two honest catches. The card-only policy is firm, so leave the cash for somewhere else. And after a certain evening hour the espresso machine shuts down and the menu goes filter-only, which is fine if you're there for pour-over but disappointing if you wandered in wanting an evening cortado. Show up earlier than later, order a flat white or the Ethiopian latte with an olive citrus muffin, and grab the patio if the weather is right. The combination of in-house roasting, Turkish coffee, and a dog-friendly footprint makes Boxx one of the more specific shops in the Arts District.
