About

Near the UCSB campus in Goleta/Isla Vista, CAJ Coffee Roasters is the original location of a small CAJ chain (also in Santa Barbara), makes its own almond milk, stays open later than most college cafes, and freshly grinds coffee for syrups and garnishes. The room runs active and modern with lots of plants. Social and busy. Outside tables run too high for the seats, which is the layout quirk to know.

The drink and food list is built for the UCSB crowd. The iced caramel latte with almond milk is the signature use of the house-made almond milk. The flat white is the test of the bar. The mushroom cheese bagel sandwich with tomato and avocado is the food order that handles lunch through long study sessions. The blended CAJE latte is the dessert-leaning signature. The drip coffee runs an Ethiopia blend. The garlic chicken wrap is the savory anchor.

The regulars are UCSB students using the cafe as the off-campus study room, locals of five-plus years who treat the room as a daily stop, the breakfast and brunch crowd, and travelers passing through.

The honest caveats are real and stack up. There is no bathroom on site. The cafe sends customers to the pizza spot next door, which works but is the kind of detail that matters for a long study session. Street parking only is the rule, and during the UCSB school year, the parking situation has been called crazy. The $9 bagels run pricey, which is worth knowing before you order three. The concrete tables get uncomfortable for long sits, which compounds with the bathroom situation for anyone planning a four-hour session.

The house-made almond milk is the technical detail that justifies ordering the iced caramel latte with almond milk specifically, because the house version tastes nothing like the commodity version. The late hours and the original-location lineage make CAJ the right room for the UCSB study crowd, and the small-chain expansion to Santa Barbara has not diluted what the Goleta location is doing. The Ethiopia drip blend is the bag worth a try.
