About

Char & Stave is a coffee shop by day and a cocktail bar by night, in the same room, with a barista team that gets named by first name in reviews more often than most cafes have staff. Kelsi, Mobsie, Christian, Ezra, Amber. That kind of staff continuity is the whole game in a place that runs both daytime and evening service, because the customer who comes in at nine for a latte and at nine at night for a cocktail recognizes the same face on both visits. Hard to fake.

The room is hip and bar-feeling. Laptops in the morning, board games and a nightcap at night. Bar seating and tables, though space is tight for a large group of more than four or five. Open mics happen here. Dogs are welcome indoors, which is a small policy choice that affects the energy of the room in a good way.

The whiskey smash latte is the unusual order that works. It's exactly the kind of cross-discipline drink a hybrid cafe-bar can pull off because the staff knows both sides. Iced decaf maple latte for the afternoon. The iced matcha with strawberry has a small following that talks it up specifically. Seasonal cocktails from the same team that pulls your morning espresso are the evening play.

Wi-Fi can be flaky. That's the trade-off for a space that's wearing two hats and a building that doesn't seem to prioritize the network. If you can ride out an occasional drop and don't need to spread out across four tables with a team, the Ardmore room handles long sessions well.

The open mics are worth flagging as a feature for some customers and a warning for others. If you're a quiet-coffee person and you happen to drop in on a mic night, the volume is going to be more than you wanted. Check the calendar.

The long-running barista team is what most regulars keep coming back for, more than any single drink. That's the kind of advantage that compounds with time. A place where the staff has been around long enough to know your name is rare in any town, and rarer still in a cafe that doubles as a bar. You might end up staying for a cocktail you didn't plan on, which is exactly what the room is designed to make happen.
