By day it is Cognoscenti. By night it is Good Clean Fun. The DTLA outpost on South Olive shares its room with a natural-wine bar that takes over the same counter in the evening, with espresso machines beside the Slovak and Chilean wine pours when the changeover happens. The cross-program crowd is part of the appeal, and the quirky mix of coffee regulars and natural-wine drinkers makes the room feel less like a cafe than like a small shared bar with two programs running through it. A laid-back single-room space in the daylight hours, with indoor and patio seating, then the same room turns at switchover into something different. The coffee program is single-origin and serious. The honey rose latte is the most-named specialty drink, the one to order if you want to see what the menu personality is doing. A single-origin espresso is the cleanest read on what the roaster is doing without anything getting in the way. Stay for the evening turnover and you are looking at paired natural wine with whatever the bar is opening that week, which is the rare thing this room does and the reason coffee-and-wine people make it a destination. Now the trade-offs, because there are a few worth naming. Espressos run $5 and come in to-go cups, which is a real choice that some customers find off-putting at the price point. The wifi and outlet situation does not support long laptop sessions, so the room is not where you settle in to work for the afternoon. The restroom path is not exactly clear, which is the small operational thing that comes up. Coffee-focused drop-ins and natural-wine fans who want to see the day-to-night switch will get something genuinely unusual in the LA coffee scene. Budget drinkers, laptop workers, and people who like a clear sense of where the bathroom is should set expectations or pick differently for the morning visit.
