Couplet Coffee

Couplet is a queer-owned coffee shop in Echo Park with a second location in Santa Monica, and the matcha menu is the part of the operation that's clearly doing the most. Banana n' cream. Strawberry. Brown sugar einspanner. Pumpkin chai. The cardamom rose saffron drink is the one you order to find out what kind of place this is. The interior leans colorful and artist-driven with live music or DJs on some days, but most of the time the room runs calm. The indoor walk-up area is small. The outdoor seating is plentiful and dog-friendly.

Joey and Michael get repeat shout-outs from regulars, which tells you the bar is being run by people who care. They don't upcharge for oat milk. They do charge seven dollars for an eight-ounce hot flat white, and the bill climbs from there. That's the trade. Couplet is not trying to be your cheap morning stop, and the prices match the room and the team and the matcha program more than they match a quick weekday rotation. The coffee cola is on the menu for the people who like the format.

If coffee isn't the move, the food list runs through donuts, breakfast sandwiches, and a tuna melt that gets named in reviews. London fog with oat milk works for the non-coffee crowd. The street parking is the limitation if you're driving in, and the parking lot situation is essentially nonexistent. Free wifi makes it a viable laptop spot if you can secure a table outside. Come for the matcha, the saffron drink, and the room that's clearly a community space first and a coffee shop second. Bring the dog. Hold the budget conversation before you walk in. Don't come hoping for $4 specialty drinks. That's not the deal here, and the way Couplet has built its menu and its identity makes it clear that the people who come back are okay with that. The strawberry matcha is the starter order. The brown sugar einspanner is the second visit.
