About

Ryan and Sarah run Devour Cafe out of a small Central Avenue room that's tucked off the beaten path in Dubuque, and the menu is shorter than the praise for it. That's a good sign. The bacon croissant breakfast sandwich is the order to anchor a visit. So is the pork carnitas hash if you came hungry and want something that fills the morning. The quiche holds up. The Mayan coffee is the drink to get, and it's the one that ties the cafe to its identity. The matcha latte is the alternate if coffee isn't the day's plan.

The room is cozy and peaceful in a way that depends on it being small. Unique seating squeezed into a small footprint. Old magazines on the tables, the kind of quirky detail that means somebody is paying attention to the room past the food. The space is the second product after the menu, and the owners treat it that way.

Dietary restrictions get accommodated with a level of care that regulars call out specifically and repeatedly. If you've had a hard time at other places because of allergies or substitutions, this is the kind of cafe where asking doesn't feel like an imposition. That alone makes it a destination for people with restrictions, who tend to remember which kitchens treat them like full customers and which ones don't.

The trade-off is space. There are not many tables. A big group will struggle to seat itself, and a long laptop session will feel selfish and probably will be. The room is built for a meal and a coffee, not a workday.

Two people eating breakfast and drinking a Mayan coffee, exactly right. A traveler stopping in Dubuque who wanted a real breakfast instead of a hotel one, exactly right. A foursome that needs space to spread out, wrong choice, try a different morning or a different cafe. Owner-operated places run on the energy the owners can sustain, and the small footprint here is part of what keeps the food at the level it's at. Pushing it to scale would break what's good about it.
