Enigma Coffee

The Sam is the drink. Salted vanilla iced latte, named for whoever Sam was, and it's why most regulars walk into Enigma Coffee on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. The shop roasts in-house. The room is no-frills in a way you should take seriously before you go. Limited indoor seating. Tables and chairs on the sidewalk. Some customers describe the space as bare-bones, with ownership not pouring much budget into the room itself, and that read is fair. The music has included Talking Heads and the Kinks, and if those are your bands, you'll feel at home. If you wanted a polished cafe experience with a designed interior, this isn't that, and the shop isn't pretending otherwise.

An oat milk latte for the simple route, a chai latte for something warmer, or the Ethiopian single-origin black if you want to taste the in-house roasting directly without dairy or syrup getting in the way.

Who should not come here. Dog owners who want to bring pups inside, since indoor seating is limited and not set up for it. Anyone needing to work on a laptop, because there are no outlets and the sidewalk wifi situation isn't built for it. Anyone showing up in a rainstorm, because you'll be standing on the sidewalk while you wait for your drink and the limited indoor seats fill up fast.

Who should come here. WeHo regulars who want a no-frills spot for a quick, distinctive iced drink and don't need the room to do more than serve coffee. The Sam is dialed. The sidewalk-cafe feeling is real for the people who treat it as their neighborhood stop. Just don't expect more from the room than it's trying to deliver, because the room is delivering exactly what it set out to.
