House-roasted beans from around the world, sourced ethically with workers paid fairly, and a Cyclops coffee machine doing the pour-overs. That's the technical pitch at this Virginia Beach roastery in the ViBe district, just inland from the oceanfront.

A dog wall of fame covers part of the cafe, with photos of regulars' pups, and pup cups come topped with real whipped cream. The room itself is calming, small, intimate, with the kind of community feel that chain coffeehouses can't manufacture. Out back, a garden patio handles the overflow and is the better seat if the weather cooperates.

The Dirty Chai is a reliable order. Seasonal lattes rotate through, including an almond joy latte that returns periodically. A vanilla and lavender latte is the floral option. The Vietnamese roast hits hard if you want something heavier, and a Kona pour-over through the Cyclops is the technical showpiece. A blueberry honey latte and a cinnamon bun latte round out the sweeter end.

Dog owners are the unmistakable core of the clientele, alongside specialty coffee enthusiasts who come specifically for the pour-over program. Locals near the oceanfront treat it as a daily stop, and tourists wander in from the beach and the ViBe galleries.

Three honest caveats. The indoor space is small with limited and not particularly comfortable seating, so plan around the garden patio when you can. Food is restricted to pre-packed snacks, so don't come hungry expecting a brunch menu. And the roasting program only covers medium and medium-dark, which means light-roast drinkers will need to look elsewhere. None of that undermines what the cafe does well: serious coffee, dogs welcome, a patio that earns its keep, and a small-business feel that the rest of the ViBe district shares but few execute as cleanly as this one. Order a pour-over, take it to the back, and the place sells itself.
