Folklore Coffee

The roaster is in the room. That's the first thing you notice at Folklore, along with the smell, and the fact that the espresso comes with a sidecar if you order a shot. This is a small Whitefish cafe that takes its coffee seriously enough to pull shots with care and rotates a seasonal syrup and pastry program that genuinely changes with the seasons, not just the marketing.

The sourdough cinnamon roll is the named draw, and a sourdough cinnamon roll done right is one of the great pastry forms. The maple donuts are the second order, and the honey berry or Flathead cherry donuts when they appear are worth a detour. The bacon breakfast burrito does the morning-after job competently, and the breakfast toast is the lighter alternative. In fall the pumpkin spice latte is one of the better versions of that drink you'll find anywhere, since the syrup is house-made and not the corporate concentrate every other cafe is reaching for.

The room itself is cozy in the way a mountain-town cafe should be. A couch, wooden bench seating, spacious tables, fast wifi, board games on hand if you're killing time before a hike. It gets crowded, especially in tourist months when Glacier traffic flows through town and Whitefish absorbs the overflow.

Service is hit-or-miss according to recent customers, and that's worth knowing if you're on a tight morning schedule. Plenty of folks wait longer than they expected to. Once your drink lands, the coffee itself reliably delivers, which is the trade most small roasters ask you to make.

Good for remote workers and people running meetings who need fast internet and roomy tables. The board games on the shelf earn points if you're meeting somebody early and waiting out the line, or killing an hour before a trailhead. Bring patience for the line and headphones for the roaster noise. Order the cinnamon roll regardless of what else you're getting.
