Owner Jimmy Su has been running Fresh Roast in San Gabriel for 25 to 30 years, roasting the coffee himself and cooking all the food himself. The Hong Kong-style cafe stays open later than most coffee shops, looks frozen in time in the best vintage sense, and is packed with greenery, art, trinkets, books, and funny signs that have accumulated over the decades.
The room is nostalgic in a way only an actual 25-plus-year operation can be. The Hong Kong coffee shop reference is the right one. Eclectic and homey, with visual layers that wouldn't be possible to fake.
The drink and food list is the menu the regulars came for. The pandan coconut Vietnamese coffee and the sea salt Vietnamese coffee are the two Vietnamese coffee orders to know. HK egg waffles stuffed with Portuguese custard are the signature snack, and the standalone Portuguese egg tarts cover the simpler version. The sesame latte with oat milk is the unexpected coffee order that works better than it sounds. The ube Vietnamese latte runs purple and faintly nutty. The siphon coffee is the technical pull for anyone who hasn't watched the brew theater up close.
The regulars are the study and hang-out crowd taking advantage of the later hours, San Gabriel Valley locals, Mandarin-speaking customers who have noted warmer treatment in customer feedback, Asian-cuisine enthusiasts using the cafe as part of a larger SGV food itinerary, and families.
A few honest things. Free street parking is tricky in the SGV. Owner can be cranky or tablesidey, which is part of the personality that comes with a quarter-century of running the same room. There is a two-hour WiFi limit, which means the laptop session has a built-in cap. The Mandarin-speaking-customer warmth is a real thread in the feedback, so non-Mandarin-speaking customers should know the dynamic before they read coolness as rudeness.
The HK egg waffles with Portuguese custard and a sea salt Vietnamese coffee is the order combination that makes the visit. Jimmy is the cafe.
