About

Clifford opens the shop, roasts the beans inside, and tends to chat with whoever walks through the door while he's setting up. That's the Grays Ferry Coffee experience in one sentence, and most of the South Philly regulars who keep coming back will tell you the conversation is part of what they're paying for. He is named, by name, in review after review. The shop runs on his presence, and the trade-off is honest: you get an owner-served cup and a short conversation about what's in it. The in-house roasting is the other half of the pitch. He's not pulling shots off a bag someone else burned.

The space itself is small and clean. Outdoor seating takes the pressure off when it gets busy, which doesn't happen all that often. No crowding issues, no line out the door, just a neighborhood roaster doing its thing on South 30th in a part of South Philly that doesn't have a lot of specialty options. The vibe is owner-led and unfussy. You walk in, you order, you talk if you feel like talking.

Order the black drip if you want to taste what they're roasting in-house. The Vietnamese coffee is the other thing regulars name, and it's worth the order if you've never had it pulled by someone who cares about the ratio. The espresso is solid. There are pastries at the counter for anyone who wants something to go with the cup. The prices are affordable, which matters in a neighborhood without a lot of other options.

What this isn't is a laptop cafe. Reviews don't mention WiFi or a setup that invites a long sit, and the size of the place suggests you're better off ordering, sitting outside if the weather's right, and moving on. If you're looking for a desk and a power outlet, keep walking. If you want a quick, affordable, owner-served cup and a few minutes with the guy who roasted the beans, this is the pitch, and it lands.
