Greencastle Coffee Roasters isn't a cafe. Owner Mike runs a retail shop on East Baltimore Street with over 100 bean varieties, a deep loose-leaf and herbal tea selection, sample-sized bags, k-cups, French presses, and a bin of fresh-roasted peanuts that surprises most first-timers. A cafe next door was in the planning stage at the time of recent reviews. For now, the operation is built for taking things home, not for sitting and lingering.

The smell hits you at the door. Coffee and herbs, in proportions that shift with the season. A daily brew is typically out for tasting, so you can sample what's roasting before you commit to a bag. Whole-bean coffee covers the range from organic to decaf to flavored, with sample sizes for anyone who wants to try three or four before buying a pound. Loose-leaf tea fills its own wall, with fill-your-own tea bags for the customer who wants the convenience without the chain-brand markup. The snicker cookie is the case grab. The fresh-roasted peanuts are the order regulars take home in addition.

This is a home-brewers shop and a tea-drinkers shop. The catalog depth alone makes the trip worth it for anyone tired of mail-order or grocery-aisle beans. K-cup customers get respect rather than judgment, which isn't a given in a specialty shop. French presses and other brewing gear sit on shelves for anyone setting up at home.

The catch is honest. No mention of seating, wifi, or outdoor seating, because none of those are the point. Don't show up expecting a coffee shop. Show up expecting a small, focused retail operation that will let you taste before you buy and walk out with bags of beans, tea, and possibly peanuts. The cafe next door, when it opens, will round out the experience. For now, treat Greencastle as the supply run. Mike knows what he's doing.
