There's a coffee bar inside a skate shop. That's the whole setup at Idlewild, tucked into the back of No-Comply near downtown Austin. Plenty of customers stumble in for boards and discover the espresso. Then they come back for the espresso and ignore the boards.
The vibe is grunge and skater-leaning, with good music on the speakers and a small Funko Pop collection above the counter that's either charming or beside the point depending on your tolerance for the form. The baristas are dog-friendly, which fits the kind of crowd that wanders in from the No-Comply side. Mostly grab-and-go, with a couple of seats outside if you want to linger briefly with your drink before pushing on to the next thing.
The flat white and the pour over have both been cited as among the best in Austin, which is the kind of claim that gets thrown around carelessly except for the times when it isn't. Order them and judge for yourself. The iced oat latte is the warm-weather workhorse for the Austin summer that runs nine months long. The lavender honey latte is the floral pick that doesn't tip into perfume territory. The vanilla caramel hot latte covers the sweeter end of the menu for anyone who came in wanting something closer to dessert.
Kombucha is on the menu if coffee isn't on the day's agenda, which is a useful escape hatch in a city where everybody assumes you want espresso.
No wifi reported, and seating is minimal by design. Don't come here to work or to study. The room isn't built for it and the skate shop foot traffic would interrupt you anyway. Come here to drink a properly pulled shot, look at skateboards you may or may not buy, and leave with the kind of coffee story that makes a better text message than most cafe visits do.
