The plants are the first thing. Ixxa Coffee Roasters is a modern sleek Hammond room packed with greenery and natural light, recently refreshed, and the plant-filled look comes up in nearly every review without exception. The owner couple runs both the cafe and the roastery, and they use the space for events on top of the regular service. That dual-purpose use of the room is part of why it's been thought through so carefully.
The Mayan Latte is the signature drink and the order to start with. The Dulce de Leche and the brown sugar shaken espresso are the other names that get repeated in reviews. The matcha is hand-whisked, which matters because most cafes don't bother. Order that if matcha is your thing and you've been disappointed by powder-and-pump shortcuts elsewhere.
Seating is comfortable and there's a patio with a water bowl for dogs, which is the small touch that brings dog owners back. One honest catch worth knowing. Outlets are limited per at least one customer, so if you came to work and need to plug in, scout fast or come during a slow hour.
The in-house roasting program is the backbone of what the cafe does, and the espresso reflects it. The Northwest Indiana coffee scene isn't deep enough to support a lot of specialty roasters, which means Ixxa pulls customers from across the region for the bean program as much as for the cafe itself.
The space has the kind of considered design that goes beyond a single Pinterest-board reference. Plants are real and well kept, not the dust-collecting fake fronds that some cafes substitute. Natural light is real and not a marketing line. The room is sized for a customer to take their drink, sit somewhere comfortable, and look at something interesting while they drink it.
For matcha drinkers and remote workers who can deal with a hunt for an outlet, this is the destination. For dog owners with a patio preference, this is the destination. For Northwest Indiana coffee fans who've gotten tired of driving to Chicago for the bean selection, this is the destination. The combination of all three is what makes Hammond worth the drive.
