About

Dollar drip coffee is rare enough in 2026 that it's worth leading with, and John Joseph Coffee in Sauk City is one of the places still doing it. The exterior is unassuming. The interior leans into what one customer called Midwest chic, and the smell of fresh roast hits you on the way in. Reviewers across Southern Wisconsin describe the shop as the affordable, well-roasted option in a region that doesn't have many.

The signature dark roast is the one to ask about. The broader range of dark coffees is where this roaster has built its reputation, and the in-house roasting means the bags on the shelf were not sitting in a warehouse for two months before they got there. Whole-bean bags travel home with the regulars. Drip coffee is the cup to order at the counter, and at a dollar it's hard to argue with. The owner is the kind of person you end up talking to whether or not you planned to.

Indoor and outdoor seating both exist but are limited. The community feel comes through in the way customers talk about the place, and the warmth of the room is one of the things that keeps people coming back. Wifi is available, which makes it work for solo laptop time as long as you can grab a seat.

Parking is the issue. one customer flagged it as severely limited, so if you're driving in at a peak hour, plan for that. Sauk City is small enough that street parking nearby exists, but the cafe itself isn't sitting on a lot. Large groups should look elsewhere because the seating won't accommodate the spread.

Travelers passing through Sauk City on the way somewhere else have made this a regular detour, and the price-to-quality ratio is the reason. Southern Wisconsin doesn't have a lot of small roasters doing dark coffee at this level for the money, and John Joseph has built a real following by holding that combination together. The dollar drip is the entry point. The whole-bean dark roasts are the reason you come back.
