Beans and Olive are the shop dogs. They're regulars at Just Be Coffee Roasters in Munster, which is owner Steve's warehouse-and-garage operation that doubles as a vintage rock vinyl shop and houseplant retailer. The space is exactly what it sounds like: a garage with seating, a coffee bar, and a record bin you can flip through while waiting for a cortado. Plants are for sale on the shelves alongside the bagged coffee.
The coffee is roasted in house. Soiree is the dark roast that anchors the rotation and the bag most home brewers leave with. Espresso, cold brew, cappuccino, latte, Americano, and coffee on draft for people who want it from the tap rather than from a brewer. The draft is the move on a hot afternoon. The baked goods rotate by day of the week. Monkey bread comes out on Wednesdays. The cinnamon rolls have historically been a Friday move, though the rotation shifts. Banana bread sits in the case often enough that one regular called it their favorite pastry, period. White chocolate macadamia cookies and oat bars round out the offering.
The environment splits people. Some regulars love the warehouse feel and the dogs and the records, and that combination is the whole reason they show up. Others find it explicitly not cozy, which is fair, because polished it isn't. Some seating up front, more outside, no real attempt at a third-wave cafe aesthetic. Acoustics are loud enough that conversation across a table can be work. WiFi isn't promoted as a feature, which tells you what Steve thinks the cafe is for.
The fit is dog owners and dog lovers, bean buyers and home brewers, vinyl record fans, plant collectors picking up something on the way out, customers who want a garage vibe and not a cafe one. The fit is not laptop workers needing a reliable workspace or anyone wanting a warm enveloping atmosphere with soft lighting and quiet music. Steve is on site often, the dogs are running around, and the trade-off is honest about what kind of place this is.
