Lakeside Coffee Roasters

Just south of the Quebec border, Lakeside catches a lot of travelers coming and going through Rouses Point. The cafe roasts coffee in-house, the seating area is big and home-like with armchairs mixed in among tables, and the bathrooms are clean (a detail any cyclist on the northern Lake Champlain routes learns to appreciate). A bike rack out front and picnic tables across the street make the cyclist welcome explicit.

The breakfast sandwich game runs on English muffins. Bacon, egg, and cheese is the staple order, and a turkey gobbler panini covers the lunch crowd. The Reuben holds its own. Iced lattes and a chai cover the drink side, and the dark roast drip is the workhorse order for anyone who wants something straightforward. Wifi is free, which makes the big seating area double as a remote-work spot on slow mornings.

The catch is the recent slide. The air inside has gone stuffy on some visits, which a couple of regulars have flagged. Service slows to a crawl when a single staffer is running the floor, the kitchen, and the espresso bar at once. The room has the bones of a great small-town cafe, but the staffing pattern doesn't always match the volume. On a smooth day, you'll get a coffee, a sandwich, and a comfortable hour at a table. On a rough one, you'll wait longer than you should and the air won't move.

Border-crossers wanting a stop before or after customs fit in well. Cyclists riding the lake routes treat the bike rack as the obvious sign and the picnic tables as their refueling base. Remote workers settling in with wifi need to time it around the busy windows. Order a bacon egg and cheese, an iced latte, and a quiet table by the window if you can get one. When the place is running well, it's the kind of small-town cafe you remember on the drive home.
