The cafe is a clean, minimal counter tucked inside the Garver Feed Mill, a restored former sugar factory near Olbrich Gardens, and the model is: order, grab your drink, find somewhere else in the Mill or out on the patio to sit. The larger Garver complex is spacious and worth wandering. The cafe itself is built for getting coffee, not for setting up shop.

Level 5 vegan donuts are the food item people come for, alongside espresso and pour-over that earn their billing. A pistachio lavender latte for anyone who wants something to chew on flavor-wise. A vanilla chai latte. The pour-over is where the roasting quality shows. The vegan donut situation is the kind of thing customers cross town for; Level 5 is the partner bakery and the donuts have a following beyond the Mill itself.

The trade-off is price. Nearly $8 for a 16-ounce iced vanilla latte is the kind of number that customers remember, and it's worth saying out loud rather than burying. If you're stopping in because you're already at Olbrich Gardens or wandering the Mill on a Saturday, the price is the cost of the location. If you're driving across Madison specifically for coffee, there are cheaper options.

It suits Garver Mill visitors and Olbrich Gardens walkers who want a coffee to take with them through the rest of the morning. It suits anyone curious about the vegan donut situation. It doesn't suit anyone planning to sit at the cafe itself, because the cafe isn't where you sit. Use the patio if the weather holds, use the Mill if it doesn't, and don't expect Ledger to function as a typical sit-down coffee shop. That's not what they built. The model is the Mill, and the cafe is the part of the Mill where you get coffee.
