Eric Medina runs Libra out of a small Oceanside roastery where you can watch the beans roast while you wait. That is the visit, more or less. There is no full barista bar every day. Call ahead before you drive over. The owner will probably be standing at the roaster when you arrive, and he is the person you would want to talk to anyway.
Barista service got paused during COVID and there were plans to open the storefront into a cafe, though the current state is closer to a roastery you can chat your way into. The room is cozy, cool, relaxed, small enough that conversation with whoever is roasting is part of the default experience. The shop also shows up at farmers markets, which is another way to catch the lineup without making the drive into the industrial side of town. Eric will walk a customer through the process if asked, and that owner-led education is a quiet specialty of the operation.
Small-batch single origins are the focus. The Kenya espresso gets ordered repeatedly and is the steady recommendation for anyone new to the lineup. The Bingo blend has a mixed track record by subscription; one customer found it underwhelming, which is worth knowing if you are ordering blind. Cold brew and pour over fill out the menu when service is open. Libra also makes a portable pour-over device called the POURtable, which sells alongside the beans and turns up in the gear conversations the owner has with customers.
A dollar from every subscription bag funds a water filter, and the shop is known for being supportive of military customers. Both tell you something about how Eric thinks about the business and why customers in North County stay loyal across the rough patches of running a small roastery. Watching beans rotate in the drum, talking shop with the roaster, leaving with a fresh bag and a sense of what you are drinking, that is the day. Sit-down cafe seekers should keep moving. Home brewers who want a real conversation about beans will find the right door to knock on.
