Lion Coffee / Lion Cafe and General Store

The factory tour is the move. Lion Coffee runs guided walk-throughs of the Honolulu roasting facility, complete with a mini-museum of historic Lion packaging going back decades, and the cafe and general store are attached to the same building. The whole place smells like coffee. All the time.

The space itself is a renovated warehouse with a laid-back vibe, recently expanded after a remodel that gave the seating area more breathing room. Indoor seating only, no patio. Located in an industrial part of Kalihi, which means street parking can be tough and the neighborhood doesn't look like a coffee destination from the outside. Worth the navigation if you're already on Oahu, and worth planning around if you're not.

The 100% Kona cold brew is the headline, since real Kona at a real price is worth ordering when you can get it and most tourist spots are selling blends that contain barely any actual Kona. The creme brulee iced latte and the creme brulee frappe are the richer picks, the hot mocha is the standby for anyone who didn't come here to experiment, and the affogato is the play if you want coffee in dessert form. Banana bread is the food order, and a real one rather than packaged. Bagged beans come in 10 or 24 ounces at a slight discount over what you'd pay at retail elsewhere on the island, and the merchandise selection runs broad enough to cover most souvenir needs in one stop.

Free wifi and laptop-friendly seating make this work for a remote work session if you happen to be in the neighborhood. Dogs aren't allowed, which is worth flagging for visitors traveling with one.

For tourists, this is a real coffee stop with actual Hawaiian souvenirs, not the airport version that everybody else is selling. The tour itself is the reason to plan ahead rather than wander in cold.
