About

Multiple customers call Little Waves their favorite roaster in the country, which is the kind of line you flag and check before repeating. The Durham, NC operation on Chapel Hill Road runs a small cute cafe that doubles as a retail shop, with a wholesale presence at Cocoa Cinnamon and a clear lean toward light-roast Ethiopian single origins. The Royal 7 blend is the house anchor. Condor decaf is the rare decaf that gets named in reviews. The batch brew of African blends is the pour to order if you can't commit to a full pour-over.

The churro program is the move that pushes this from a strong cafe to a destination. Fresh-made churros paired with the coffee program, which is not a combination most specialty roasters offer because it requires a kitchen and a discipline most don't want to take on. The seating is ample for the room size. The bar is built for the coffee experience first and the ambiance description second, and the cute interior does the work without anyone needing to oversell it.

The sourcing posture is part of the pitch. The roastery actively supports producer-farmers and women in coffee, and the bean list reads accordingly. The Ethiopian single-origins are the bags for the light-roast drinkers who came specifically for that end of the spectrum. The Royal 7 is the safe entry. Condor decaf is the bag to bring home if decaf matters in your house. Light-roast drinkers, pour-over people, and anyone shopping for beans from a roaster who's audibly thinking about who grew them are the right fit. The one real flag is customer service responsiveness. At least one subscriber reported no replies, so for direct support questions, this might require some patience. For the beans, the bar, and the churros, it's worth the trip. Order a churro with the batch brew. Take a bag of Royal 7 home.
