About

Liturgy operates from a stall inside a Durham food hall in the Central Park area, with two competitor coffee shops next door and a block away that customers willingly walk past to order here. A former Durham resident now living in New York called the pour-over the best in the city, which is the kind of claim that comes from comparison, not loyalty.

The stall itself is industrial, bright, and cheerful rather than a standalone cafe room. Seating is whatever the food hall offers, which turns out to be a lot. Couches. Bar stools. Communal tables. Students and professionals settle in for long sessions because the food-hall amenities (food, restrooms, varied seating) cover everything a standalone shop cannot offer.

Pricing once included tax and tip baked in, though the tip prompt has since returned, so do not be surprised by the second-screen ask at the register. The shift is mild but worth knowing.

The coffee program is the reason to make the trip. Rotating high-end single origins on the pour-over (one customer tasted jasmine in the cup). A cortado a regular called the best they remember having, which is a high bar in a city with several serious specialty cafes. The macchiato and matcha latte round out the menu for people who want something more familiar.

What it is not: a traditional cafe with its own room or a patio. If that is what you are after, the shop next door is right there and probably better suited. The food-hall context changes the experience. You order coffee, then you can grab food from a different vendor without losing your seat, then you can move to the next thing. That kind of flexibility is what wins Liturgy its customers over the surrounding shops.

If you want serious specialty coffee with food-hall amenities, easy street and garage parking, and the option of bouncing to a vendor for food without losing your seat, Liturgy is doing something the standalones around it are not. The setting is the strategy.
