About

Lore Coffee Roasters runs out of a small space on Main Street in Bonners Ferry, just off the highway in Boundary County, northern Idaho. People drive over an hour from neighboring towns to get there. They rank it above Coeur d'Alene and the Evans Brothers crowd among North Idaho roasters, and once you have sat down for a cup you understand the ranking. The room is small and well decorated, with history references on the walls that reward looking around, and the welcoming feel that small rural shops either have or do not.

The coffee program leans organic, specialty grade, mold-free, with no char and none of the acidic burn that gives lesser dark roasts away. The signature drink is called The Right Choice and works hot or iced as a breve. The lavender latte shows up seasonally and is worth catching while it is on the board. Rose chai breve for the chai drinkers. An americano paired with the in-house waffles is the meal-adjacent move if you have driven in hungry. A cappuccino if you want the espresso unadorned. The owners and the baristas know the beans and will talk through them if you want to learn something, which is the unspoken case for visiting a small roaster in the first place. Pastries fill out the case.

This is a sit-and-sip place, not a laptop spot. The room is too small and too good for the conversation to be drowned out by typing, and the regulars treat it accordingly. The pacing of the visit runs toward conversation with whoever is behind the counter, which on most days will be someone who can tell you where the beans came from and how the roast lands. That is the kind of detail coffee-focused travelers come looking for and rarely find in a town this remote.

Coffee travelers passing through the panhandle should plan the stop deliberately and give themselves more time than they think they need. Anyone driving I-90 with strong opinions about clean sourcing will find Lore worth the detour off the main route and a half hour up Highway 95.
