The room used to be a barber shop. Downstairs, on West Maple Road in Birmingham, someone converted the old space into Lucky Detroit's local outpost, and the bones still show in a darker, lower-key atmosphere than the polished coffee bars elsewhere in town. The seating is comfortable and the room is spacious enough that it does not feel cramped at peak hours. Parking is genuinely easy in the lot behind. The crowd is largely locals running errands who duck in for a specialty drink between stops, and the room handles that traffic without ever feeling rushed.
The pull is the seasonal latte list and the pastry case. Vanilla bourbon. Pistachio with pistachio syrup. The strawberry matcha when it returns is a quiet favorite that regulars wait for, and the rotation keeps the menu interesting across visits. Pair any of them with the almond croissant and you have figured out the place. Beans are roasted in-house, which the owners take seriously and the cup reflects. On the rare day when the seasonal board feels too sweet for what you want, a vanilla bean latte runs straight and clean. The pistachio syrup is the kind of house touch that separates the operation from the chain alternatives down Woodward, and the espresso program runs strong enough that a straight cortado would hold its own against the lattes.
Two honest catches. The shop serves drinks in paper cups, including for-here orders, which disappointed at least one regular who wanted a proper mug at a sit-down. And the WiFi is, by multiple accounts, terrible to nonexistent. This is not a place to bring a laptop and set up for three hours.
The indoor seating is dog-friendly, which keeps the morning errand crowd loyal. Treat the shop the way it wants to be treated: get a good drink, take a seat with your dog, eat the almond croissant, move on with your day. Lucky Detroit Birmingham becomes one of the more enjoyable quick stops in this corner of Oakland County when you let the room be what it is.
