Medleno is a coffee nook in downtown Danville, family-owned, run by Ida and her family out of a tiny order counter with no indoor seating and a handful of outdoor tables. The room is cute and small. The operation runs mostly takeout, and one regular stops here mid-bike-ride for a quick cup, which is the kind of customer the setup is built around: someone with somewhere else to be and the right neighborhood timing. The beans are fresh-roasted East African and Kenyan: Harrar, Sidamo, Yirgacheffe, Kenyan AA, lined up at the counter for whole-bean buyers to take home in the same trip as the morning latte. The drink menu runs a caramel latte with plant milk, an oat milk latte, drip, pour-over, and a Turkish coffee, which is unusual enough on a Bay Area suburban menu to be the reason for a visit on its own. Order the caramel latte with plant milk, the Turkish coffee, a pour-over, a fresh bagel to take with you. Take home a whole-bean Ethiopian or Kenyan bag at around $16-21 a pound, the kind of pricing that puts these in the bean-collector tier but justifies the spend if you grind and brew at home. Bean buyers, grab-and-go customers, cyclists, and weekend walkers who can sit outside on a clear morning are the right audience for the setup the family has built here. Laptop work is not what this place is built for, and a rainy day is going to push you back to the car or down the block to find indoor seating elsewhere. The family ownership shows up in the small touches: Ida or her family at the counter, the regular cyclist getting a quick nod and a drink ready before they ask, the bagels stocked because someone asked and somebody else asked again. Catch it on a clear morning, order the Turkish coffee for the table, walk the rest of downtown Danville with a Yirgacheffe bag in your hand and a fresh bagel still warm. The East African focus is the part of the bean program worth knowing about, and a half-pound of Sidamo will tell you whether the roasting matches the prices.
