Mills Coffee Roasting Co

Mills Coffee Roasting was founded in 1860 and is one of the oldest roasters in the country. It's on Broad Street in Providence, and visits are by appointment. Buzz the intercom and owner Susan will come down and show you around.

Most of what they do is roasting for Rhode Island restaurants and coffee houses, many of them long-time accounts. For home, order on their website, TheQueenBean.com. A subscription runs about $20 for three or four bags a month. You'll also find their coffee at Belmont Market, Dave's Marketplace, Dino's Park & Shop and IGA Marketplace, and through Munroe Dairy home delivery.

Whole bean Sumatra is a steady pick, and Dave's carries a decaf French vanilla ground coffee with a local following. There's no café.
