modern coffee is a small, bright shop on 19th Street in downtown Oakland, with high ceilings. Head through the back to an atrium courtyard, where staff bring your order to you. There's wifi and outlets. It gets packed at peak times.

The burnt cinnamon latte uses a house-made syrup. Try the Kashmiri chai, lavender latte, Blackstrap iced coffee or hot chocolate. There's a ham and cheese croissant.
