Muddy Waters Coffee Company

Muddy Waters is Chris's operation in McKinleyville, in the part of Humboldt County where roasting your own beans means something different than it does in Brooklyn. Most of the relationship customers have with this place is by mail. Beans go out fast, the Humboldt medium roast has worked its way onto Costco shelves, and the McKinleyville co-op stocks them locally for the people who'd rather pick up a bag in person.

The Humboldt medium is the bestseller and the one to start with. Annie & Mary blend is the second pick people name, and the light roasts have their own following. Owner-direct service is part of the appeal; mail-order buyers dominate the customer base, and the kind of buyer who picks a small Humboldt roaster tends to want a person on the other end of the order, not a fulfillment center.

This isn't a cafe visit. There's no atmosphere story to tell because customers don't tell one, and the operation isn't built around walk-in coffee. The fit is a home brewer who wants fresh, locally roasted beans shipped quickly from Northern California, or a local in the area willing to stop by the co-op for the same bag.
