New City Cafe & Roastery

New City is a nonprofit. The cafe exists to train and employ local young people, many of them from situations that make a first job hard to come by, and the dollars you spend on a cortado go toward keeping that workforce program alive. Worth knowing up front, because it changes how you read everything else about the room.

The space is earthy-toned and laid-back, with cushioned window seats, a sofa, scattered tables, a high chair if you've got a kid, and a coat stand by the door. It feels like a neighborhood living room, which is the point. One recent flag worth surfacing: customers have complained about smoke smell drifting inside, and the issue has come up more than once. If you've got asthma or you're sensitive to it, that's a real consideration.

Coffee is roasted on site. The cortado and the brown sugar latte are the workhorses, and the Maple Cinnamon Chai and Cookie Butter Latte rotate in as the seasonal tilts. Both are worth catching if they're up on the board. Food is more substantial than the usual cafe selection. Breakfast sandwiches and bowls are real meals, the Vermont sandwich does what it should, and the vegan breakfast sandwich on the bagel is one of the better vegan options at a neighborhood cafe in Rochester.

Free wifi, room to spread out, baristas who are often learning the job in front of you. The trade-off is that service is sometimes new-hire service, slower than the chain across town and occasionally rough around the edges. The upside is that your latte is propping up a program training kids who needed the chance. A long focused work session or a slow catch-up with a friend both work in this room. Showing up here is closer to civic participation than most cafe visits get, and the coffee happens to be good on its own terms.
