About

Newberry sits in a Torrance strip mall plaza, and one customer calls it the best roaster in the South Bay. The shop is tiny: one long high-top inside, a small outside bench, and that's the seating. Pour-over crafts displayed up front are decorative; they don't serve pour-overs despite what the display suggests. Walk in expecting a hangout cafe and you'll be confused. Walk in to buy beans, grab a quick drink, or meet a friend at a middle spot, and the place makes sense.

The family runs it, and conversations at the counter are part of the experience. The owner is at the counter, the family is around, and the back-and-forth across the bar is a feature of the operation rather than something to apologize for. South Bay roasted beans at a fair price are the through-line. A brown sugar latte (almond milk is the regulars' move). Strawberry matcha. Shakerado for the espresso drinkers. Avocado toast and an avocado caprese on the food side. An almond croissant. Tea and boba drinks for the people not there for the coffee.

The tiny-shop format is the constraint that shapes everything else. There's no room to set up a laptop, no quiet corner to take a meeting, no second floor to escape to. What there is, is a one-counter operation where you can buy beans roasted in the South Bay at a price that doesn't punish you for buying them, and have a real conversation with the people who roasted them while you wait for your drink.

It suits bean buyers, quick stoppers, and people meeting a friend at a halfway point. It does not suit laptop work, long sit-downs, or anyone expecting a third-wave cafe environment with pour-overs and a row of outlets. The pour-over crafts on display are a small, funny tell: the shop knows what it's not, and isn't trying to fake it. Order a bag of beans, chat with the owner, and head out. That's the use case the format is built for.
