About

A renovated 1920s home on the North Fork of Long Island holds North Fork Roasting Co., with a cafe downstairs, an upstairs library and kids playroom, and small offices for work. The bones are the appeal. Roasting happens in house. Sundays bring pop-ups, winters bring a fire outside, summers bring outdoor music. Fresh duck eggs are sold at the counter.

The room reads like someone's house, in the best sense. Furniture you can sink into, a savory roaster aroma carrying through the building, and an eclectic outdoor area that picks up the seasonal music in summer. The quintessential coffee house feel is the right phrase, and the 1920s home setting is what saves it from generic.

The drink list is direct. The latte is the daily order. The iced blueberry latte is the warm-weather pull. The strawberry matcha is the seasonal sweet move. The House Blend coffee is the bag to take home. On the food side, the BLTA on ciabatta and the brekky sambo egg sandwich on a fresh croissant are the morning anchors. The chai with coffee ice cubes and fresh ground nutmeg is the small detail that signals the kitchen cares.

The regulars cluster by upstairs and downstairs. New moms use the upstairs kids room as the rare cafe where the kid is welcome to be a kid. Locals chat with the regulars over the counter. North Fork visitors stop on a winery loop. Families with kids use both floors. Dog owners are part of the daily traffic. Remote workers book the upstairs offices for actual quiet.

One honest caveat. The leniency with dogs indoors has caused allergy complaints, with four to five dogs at a time at peak hours. If dander is an issue, the outdoor area is the better seat. If you brought a dog, the staff are accommodating, but be aware of the room's saturation.

The upstairs library is the underrated reason to come. The duck eggs at the counter are the souvenir nobody expects.
