There's a mosaic mural set into the sidewalk outside, which is the first hint that this Belmont Street cafe is more invested in the visual art community than the average Portland coffee shop. One regular calls it a hub for that crowd, and the art on the walls inside backs it up. Old Friends Coffee Roasters runs small. A handful of small tables. A few outdoor seats. More than one customer wishes there were more seating, which is the kind of complaint you only get when people want to stay.
The house pre-mixes its lattes from transparent house beans, which is an unusual production choice and one that lets them keep the bar moving without sacrificing what they want the drink to taste like. Americano, latte, affogato, soft serve, pastries. Whole beans on the retail shelf for anyone who wants to brew the same beans at home. The soft serve and the affogato pull people in who weren't planning to stay for one.
The pour is careful. The room is quiet and cozy. The southeast Portland aesthetic of thoughtful design and not too much noise is fully present, and the lack of seating becomes part of the etiquette. People come in, get coffee, sit if a table opens, and move on if it doesn't.
This is not a laptop cafe. The tables are small and the seating is limited, which means the right move is a short stop with intent. Order, sit if you can, walk if you can't. Pick up a bag of beans on the way out if the cup convinced you, which it probably will. The visual art ties give the room a character most third-wave Portland spots don't bother trying to build.
The affogato is the order to make on a hot afternoon, and the soft serve gives the menu a draw that pulls in a different crowd than the bean buyers. Americano works as the everyday default. The lattes are clean because of the pre-mix discipline, not in spite of it, and the bar moves through orders without the choreographed slow theater you get at certain other Portland addresses.
