About

Max and Julianna own a coffee farm in Peru. They ship the green beans to San Carlos and roast them weekly, in small batches, in the back of a tiny shop on Old County Road. Seven years in. That is Papachay Peruvian Coffee, and the whole operation runs out of a mom-and-pop storefront in front of the roaster.

You order at a window. There is a small cute patio off to the side and that is about it for seating. The place is deliberately not third-wave styled. No big espresso machine staged for photos. Warm, welcoming, farm-to-cup, and largely a grab-and-go rhythm where the owners will talk you through the beans if you want to know what you are drinking. The window-counter model is the whole format, and it does what it sets out to do without pretending to be a cafe.

The peaberry is what to order if you want to taste why people drive here. Peaberry beans grow as a single round bean instead of the usual split pair, which concentrates flavor, and the Papachay version is worth the trip. The capuchino and mocha are the everyday picks. Espresso for the smaller cup. Espresso beans by the bag if you want to take the farm home.

On the food side, the empanadas (beef or vegan) and the cheese bread are the right thing to eat with any of it. The empanadas are why some regulars stop in even when they are not buying coffee. Most of the food and drink is built for the road, not the table.

Closed one day a week because they are at the Mountain View Farmers Market, which is the other half of the business. Not a place for laptops. Not a place for tables. If you want to meet the people who grew the coffee in your cup, and if a window-counter and a small patio sound right, this is one of the more honest setups in the Bay Area. Driving up 101 with time for empanadas is the version of the visit that works best. Less of a fit for sit-down expectations or any group larger than two.
